When we started roasting our own coffee in 1998, the goal was to roast for CBD’s coffeehouses and eventually expand into wholesale. Six months into roasting, we were invited to pitch Fore Street, the top restaurant in the area, often credited with launching the farm-to-table movement in Maine. What we viewed as a chance to learn for future opportunities resulted in our winning the coveted account. And so began our wholesale business and the now twenty-year-plus journey working with select restaurants which share Coffee By Design’s passion for excellence. Our roastery team works closely with chefs, managers, and owners to develop unique coffee blends that complement their restaurants’ menus, and we are proud to have our coffee served at many of the area’s top restaurants. Several James Beard award winners are among our customers (including Sam Hayward of Fore Street). By the way, Fore Street is still a valued CBD partner, as are their other restaurants and bakery: Street & Co., Scales, and Standard Baking Co.
